Buenos Aires City Mayor Mauricio Macri won November’s historic presidential runoff to usher Argentina into a new era as President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner departs from La Casa Rosada. Macri, the Let’s Change coalition candidate, garnered 51 percent of the vote against 48 percent for Front for Victory candidate Daniel Scioli (who happened to be Kirchner’s chosen successor).

UN Refugee Agency Sounds Alarm on Violence Against Women in Central America, Mexico
Norma witnessed routine gunfights and murders when she lived in El Salvador. She paid a biweekly cuota, or street tax, to the Barrio 18 gang members controlling her neighborhood to avoid any trouble. Norma, the wife of a police officer, was the victim of a rape, which she told interviewers from the U.N. refugee agency she believes was punishment for her husband’s job.

CIA Sued for Withholding Records on U.S. Trained El Salvadoran Colonel Share This /
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has allegedly withheld records about a ranking Salvadoran military officer implicated in civilian massacres during the 1980s Salvadoran Civil War, according a recent lawsuit by the University of Washington’s Center for Human Rights (UWCHR). According to UWCHR Director Angelina Snodgrass Godoy, the center is seeking additional information on El Salvador’s Civil War to help to survivors in El Salvador.

Gianluca Costantini: The Italian Cartoonist Unmasking the Powerful
As a child Gianluca Costantini often drew images to detach himself from reality and create his own world. Without know it at the time, the famed Italian cartoonist and illustrator set himself off on a journey to bring global injustices to the fore, no matter the country, language, or struggle. “My personal target is to denounce human-rights violations, and also to expose those people who wield power and take [sic] decisions,” says Costantini, whose work has been displayed in museums and art centers from Paris to Buenos Aires.

Español Anonymous Mexico have thrown their cyber-activism behind local and international demands for justice in the wake of the murder of Mexican photojournalist Rubén Espinosa. On Saturday, August 8, at around 2 p.m. CDT, the loosely affiliated group of hackers took down a website of the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation, called Mexico Connected (Mexico Conectado).
